What's Really Holding You Back in Menopause

Years ago, when we were living in Modena, Italy, someone from the US visited us. Lovely guy. But he couldn’t stop asking the same question:

“But… what do you do here?”

We blinked. “Uh… we go for coffee. We spend time with each other. We meet up with friends. We wander around town. We read. We sit in the sun. We ride our bikes or go to the lake. We enjoy life.”

This was confusing for him. Truly, deeply confusing. He kept saying things like:

  • “I saw people sitting outside drinking coffee. In November. Why would they do that?”

  • “I don’t know what I’d do without my man cave and my 60-inch screen.”

  • “You don’t have a TV?! What do you do all day?”

It was funny at first—then it hit me: It wasn’t just cultural. It was a whole different value system.

In Italy (well, and most of Europe), downtime isn’t something to be earned or justified. It’s part of life. Time is elastic. Meals are sacred. Pleasure isn’t guilty—it’s normal.

And that deep appreciation for slowing down, connecting, and simply being? It’s one of the most powerful health tools most of us never think to use.

Fast-forward to midlife.

Here’s where the two worlds collide—and where so many women start to break down.

We’ve been raised in a culture that worships productivity. Hustle. Busyness.
Where resting makes you feel lazy.
Where menopause is either a punchline or a medical afterthought.
And where the default “solution” to feeling like crap is usually:
“Try harder”

So what do we do? We start tracking our food. Cutting carbs. Fasting. Working out six days a week. Pushing harder. Trying to be "good."

And still, we feel awful.

Bloated. Exhausted. Foggy. Snappy. Unable to focus. Craving chocolate at 10:42pm even though we “did everything right.”

The scale won’t budge. Our sleep is a joke. And somewhere along the way, we start to think, “Maybe I’m just broken.”

Let me say this for the women in the back: YOU. ARE. NOT. BROKEN.

You’re just trying to solve the wrong problem.

I learned this lesson the hard way—years of banging my head against the wall with diet after diet, miracle supplements, powders and potions.

Eventually I'd had enough. I hired a coach. She didn't hand me a new meal plan. She asked me to slow down and take smaller steps. To get curious. To listen to my body.

Honestly? I almost quit. It felt too simple. But then she said something that stuck with me:

"If all the things you've tried haven't worked...what do you have to lose by trying something different?"

So I did. And those small, simple steps? They changed everything.

Not just my health and body—my relationship with food, my body image, my emotions. It was so powerful, I spent years (and a lot of money) learning everything I could so I could help others experience their own transformation.
