Stop Waiting for Motivation. Show Up Anyway.
Let me say this loud and clear for the women in the back, the women too busy to breathe, and the women hoping that one day things will “settle down” enough to finally focus on their health:
Motivation is a lie. Your health won’t wait for a more convenient time.
Stop waiting, and show up anyway.
I say this with love—and a heaping side of experience—because I’ve been there.
I’ve been the woman who said “next week.”
The woman who thought “when this busy season passes…”
The woman who waited for the stars to align, my energy to return, and my to-do list to stop expanding exponentially.
And guess what? That magical time never came.
But the consequences? Oh, they showed up. With bells on.
The Hard Truth About Midlife Health
Here’s the reality that too many of us find out the hard way: once we hit our 40s and 50s, the rules change.
Our hormones shift, and so do our bodies:
We start losing muscle mass (called sarcopenia), which means less strength, less energy, and a slower metabolism.
Our bone density drops, raising our risk of osteoporosis and fractures.
Our brain fog thickens, and the risk of cognitive decline creeps in faster than we’d like to admit.
Our heart disease risk increases, thanks to changes in cholesterol, blood pressure, and insulin sensitivity once our oestrogen production drops and our ovaries go into retirement.
It’s not just about “a little weight gain” or “getting older.”
It’s your body asking—begging—for support.
And here’s the kicker: it only gets harder the longer you wait.
Think of Your Health Like a Bank Account
Every healthy habit you build now will make a deposit into your future.
Every workout builds muscle that protects your bones and keeps you strong.
Every nourishing meal supports your energy, your brain, and your mood.
Every boundary you set gives your nervous system space to breathe.
And when life throws curveballs (because you know it will), those deposits become your resilience fund.
They’re what you’ll draw from to recover faster, bounce back stronger, and maintain your independence later in life.
You're not doing this for a bikini body.
You’re doing it so you can climb stairs without pain, lift your own damn suitcase, and keep your marbles sharp enough to remember where you parked.
“But I’m Just Not Motivated…”
Good. Motivation is unreliable. In fact, it’s a big, fat lie.
She’s the flaky friend who only shows up when the weather’s nice, you're having a good hair day, and your inbox is empty.
Which, let’s be honest, is never.
The truth is, the days you don’t feel like showing up are the most important days to show up.
Because when you do it anyway—tired, grumpy, and wearing a sports bra that’s ready for the trash—you prove to yourself that you can be trusted.
That’s where confidence is built.
That’s where consistency is forged.
That’s where motivation starts, and where results come from—not from a perfect plan, but from persistent, imperfect, messy action.
Contrary to what you may have been taught, motivation follows action, not the other way around.
Start Small. Stay Consistent. Repeat.
You don’t need a 90-minute workout or a fridge full of kale. Remember, it's the small, consistent actions that build momentum.
Here’s a great example: Over my first 9.5 years of wearing a Fitbit, I accumulated over 40 million steps—not by grand gestures, but by choosing to move a little bit each day. Those tiny steps added up to over 12,000 miles walked!
Imagine what you could achieve by starting with just one small action today. The time is going to by anyway, so how do you want to feel 6 months from now? A year from now? 10 years from now?
Start with:
A 10-minute walk.
A glass of water.
A better snack choice.
Saying no to something that drains you, and yes to something that fuels you.
Health is built in the margins—those little moments when you choose yourself, even if it feels inconvenient.
No One Else Can Do This For You
Let’s be real:
No one is coming to drag you off the couch.
No one’s sneaking into your house to cook you nourishing meals.
No one’s forcing you to take that walk or hit the weights.
And that’s actually empowering. Because it means you get to choose.
You get to stop waiting.
YOU get to decide that this is the season where things change.
Sure, it might mean having some challenging conversations with people who expect you to always be there, drop what you’re doing, and look after them.
It might mean setting boundaries, learning to say no, and making your health non-negotiable.
But guess what? Life will go on.
And you? You’ll get stronger, clearer, and more confident because of it. And you’ll be able to be more present for those who rely on you.
