Rewriting the Rules: How to Create a More Positive Relationship With Food in Midlife

May 09, 20253 min read

Let’s be honest: most of us didn’t grow up having a healthy relationship with food. We were taught food rules, guilt, and the exhausting self-judgment of being "good" or "bad" depending on what we ate that day.

By the time we reach midlife, we’ve often spent decades in and out of diets, fighting with our bodies, and hoping that this next plan will finally be the one. But here’s the truth: using restrictive diet plans when you already have a difficult relationship with food or your body, or looking for shortcuts to lose weight faster, simply won’t work. Especially with a body that’s constantly changing throughout midlife.

You might see short-term results—but they usually come at the expense of your physical and emotional health. And how has that worked for you so far?

None of those programs will teach you how to love your body. None will help you heal emotional or binge eating. The only thing they teach you is how to diet.

Again.

If Diets Worked, You'd Be Done By Now

Remember the definition of insanity? Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

Maybe it’s time to try something different.

Maybe it’s time to stop white-knuckling your way through another juice cleanse, restrictive diet, or multi-day fasting protocol, and start actually listening to what your body needs.

You can exercise until you fall down, but you can’t force your body to lose fat when and where you want it any more than you can force a toddler to eat spinach or keep their socks on.

You can eat “healthy” foods, but if you don’t understand which foods are actually healthy for you, no amount of “clean eating” will get you where you want to go.

Because a positive relationship with food isn’t just about what you eat. It’s about how you think, how you feel, and how you treat yourself in the process.

Midlife Is the Perfect Time to Rebuild

Your body is changing. So should your approach to nutrition.

This isn’t about giving up—it’s about letting go of the old rules that were never made for you in the first place.

At Fabulous Beyond 40, we believe food should:

  • Nourish you

  • Energise you

  • Satisfy you

  • Connect you to joy, tradition, and celebration

Food is fuel—but it’s also culture, comfort, and connection. And yes, sometimes it’s chocolate cake because your best friend came over and you’re crying your way through an emotional disaster together.

You Can’t Skip the Foundations

There is an order to things.

You can’t skip the inner work of changing the way you think, building healthier habits, and developing more self-respect and still expect your physical transformation to last. It’s like trying to decorate a house before pouring the foundation.

The good news? You can build something new. You can eat without guilt. You can trust yourself around food. You can nourish your body in a way that feels empowering—not punishing.

A New Way Forward

If you’re tired of being "on" or "off" a plan... If you’re done feeling like your worth is tied to your weight... If you’re ready to feel at home in your body again...

This is your sign to take a different path.

Let food be a source of strength, not stress. Let your choices reflect care, not control. Let your next chapter be about freedom, not fear.

We’re here to help you with that. If you’d like some support to help you make that shift, all you need is to take one small step.
